And I dream that I heard some noise. And here was the street. What was. He also discusses the donation of the Seguine Mansion to the Historic House Trust, and his vision for the ongoing maintenance of the home and property. I lived in one room, for almost five years. Q: And so, what sort of vision do you have for, you know, the next the next forty years, for how the grounds are maintained and how. Q: Is there somebody in particular that you work with for reupholstery or restorations? So he came out. And I said, well, Im going to retire. I put the post on it up under the floor where the newer posts in the staircase was upstairs, and then, when I took the jack away, it sat on the post. I mean, its just normal living in a normal house. And I had to have somebody upstairs, standing on the stairs, and told me when to stop jacking, when the stairs got level, because the stairs were like this. And he said, George, you know, that big, beautiful house that sits empty? Take a walk. I said, No, no, Im gonna save this house. He said, Oh! Youre coming with me. So Id say Okay, Murphy, lets go! She was something, I mean. And whats going on up the street here now? And they said he had the box, and took it with them. I bought another restaurant, didnt I? Theyd go in and theyd take the windows out and theyd use the windows, and they destroyed it. Burke: Yes. He says, Hes my good friend, and so on, We live on Staten Island. And I got to know a tremendous amount of people that way. So I picked up this one building that had a little old bar next to it. And, of course, being in the military and traveling with them, the government shipped all my stuff that I bought and picked upshipped it all back to America for me. The walkway going to the beach, its still there, where the house was. Because look how long the war went, and England had nothing. Come here, Marge. I said, What? They said, Sell this goddamn place. You cant ride anywhere but in a circle arena. Q: You mentioned that the South Shore has changed in the last few years. Lots of photos, costs, everything. But that was a condo. No, it wasnt that. Where were you stationed and what was it like? Were going to this estate. Theyre piled up. And my sister, Bess, she was married to Walter, her husband, who was in the Navy. So all the big mansions were built with outside kitchens. But some strange things did happen in the house. I had a bulldozer two weeks, riding back-and-forth, and back-and-forth, and back-and-forth across the front of the house because you couldnt see the house from the water. I restored that, and that was an old mansionan old pillar-fronted mansionlooked like the house, similar. Too bad that there wasnt somebody with a brain. Utica. You got to get out. So we moved to Florida. And all the time when all the lilacs would come in the spring, and the whole place would smell of lilacs, its gorgeous, still is. Im offered fortunes for the front field, for the side field, for the backfield. They even stopped you riding in the parks. Burke: Scalia. I wanted to know some more details about the life tenancy. And the house across the street from it, the Old [Sir Walter] Tyrrell House. And I went from room to room and it took me a couple of years, didnt it? Restored the building, looked around, come down, bought this house from Mrs. Seguine, and then moved out of the bar and restaurantbecause I had a room upstairs in it. And I did, I got in St. George wasnt it? And that was the Air Force. I mean, as a kid going down here crabbing, down on the beach, we used to look back at the house all the time. And the house was really, needed shapebut thank God it was built as well is it was built, otherwise it would have fallen down. Q: Today is November 9, 2021. Burke: Oh, and then the house, when I bought it, everybodythe real estate lady, she wouldnt come in. It turned my stomach just to watch all of that gorgeous stuff just destroyed. And, then I gotwhod I get from the city? Burke: Yes. So I gave it to them. And if they were there and I could see them, and I could ship them free because the government had to ship it for me, and I had my sisters, who would store them for meI had had a great opportunity to pick up all this stuff that was beautiful, get it for nothing, and the government ship it back for me, and my sisters would keep it until I got a place to put it. I mean, after it was finished, who cared? But under that porch was the basement. Burke: And its great when you have friends come, you have extra bedrooms, you can put them all up. Good God! They dont know it. And in the back of the house, its still there, is aChrist, it must be half the size of this roomis a huge, huge lilac bush. Burke: I never lived in a little small house, I have no idea. Q: Yes. And as I said, I was in the military up there and we werent a big group of military, it was like a small base. I said, Gee, look at these chairs. And they said, Yes, look at them. All these walls used to be white. And then, it wasI guess that was in the spring, then later on, I dont know what I was doing. And thats where I had all this wonderful carved stuff from the Eskimos that they gave me. Beloved husband of Rosanna (Ialuna) Burke. Syosset. So while I used to work then with them, and then I decided, this is not for me. He did the White House and everything. Daller: See, now you learned about kitchens. Thats not good. The same thing thats going on with statues. Was very little time on here. Linda? And then when I went looking for myhis name was Joinerand everybody was saying, Well, Sergeant Joiner is leaving, Sergeant Joiner is leaving. And I never thought much of it. And everyone became extremely close. Oh my god. I moved in the house, and I would come in the house, and right in the front hallway, you could always smell lilacs. He painted that for me. Before he left, the house was fine. She said, George, when she died, she was laid out in the coffin, right in that room, in front of those two windows. Burke: Oh, well, look what I did. And I wish the hell I could have gotten a hold of that before they tore it down. And we were great friends. So, unfortunately, there arent many people that care that way anymore. Im going to retire, Im going to go down to that big old house, restore it, fix it all up, move in it, and enjoy it. And people were coming from all over the island. He said, when he was moving here, he told the people there, he goes, Im moving. Yes, but that was all the legal aspect of it. Thats what it is. Valley Stream. And that was, Mrs.these mirrors came from that house, they were in the parlor in that houseWhat the hell was her name? And then Iwhatd I do then, Ioh, I paid for this house, didnt I? Daller: No. They cant do anything. But they are the ones thatup in arms, saying, Aww, that poor horse. And she couldntthey couldnt keep up with it anymore. Well work it out, one way or another. And so the two of us started and we madecalled it the Old Bermuda Inn because John loved Bermuda and he was putting a lot of money in it. They were all womens stuff. Now, this is a portrait of Joseph Seguine. Okay. Then, on that side, was the dining room, and the kitchen. There was the main house, over here was the bar, over here was this big dining room, and this was the main house. Daller: Well, yes. Oh, God, I worked so damn hard. So they went into repairing things. That was the most beautiful mansion. Burke: Yes, he did that little sofa there. Because thats what I bought with the money. And I dont like this. And shed go to her father and her father and say, You know, George, shes my daughter, and this and thatand I said, Yes, well, John, let me tell you something. People that owned U.S. Steel, their mansion was over there. Theres too much business going on here. So were talking about this and talking about this. What a gorgeous home that was. I hope it isnt that the people who have access come in and empty it because Ive had people say, Oh, when youre not here, Im taking that painting, and Im taking that painting, and I want that couch, you know. Burke: Okay. Q: [laughs] How did you figure out what needed to be done with the house? Burke: After I had the house, then I got the big pieces of furniture. Daller: Oh, theOh God now, whats it called? Q: And how did you decide, I guess, how to rebuild? Daller: You werent here. Daller: So can you imagine a three room apartment filled to the brim with antiques? Daller: Oh, yes. Why cant they just appreciate something for what it is? And I lived there for quite a few years. And Ill invest in a couple of other things that will give me a nice little income, and I wont have to worry about it. Q: Yes. Burke: Mario Buatta and a couple of people of his friends that were just as big. Because back when they built the houses, kitchens were never built in the house. So they. But he did a lot of the work for you. It was so overgrown in the front yard and everything. When they shipped me back from where I was, where the Eskimos were, they sent me back to the base, because they were shipping everybody now, backafter your time was up, you had to go back because you couldnt stay any longer than two years, and after two years, you had to come back to the States. Burke: Yes, there was a little man in New Jersey. And they would give me all kinds of beautiful little carved objects and things that would be carved out of the whales teeth or. Christ, we had a good time. And I gave that, I thinkI dont know if I gave it to Bess. So I said, Well, I would have named it The Rossville Inn because it was in Rossville, but he will he loved Bermuda and he wanted Bermuda Inn. So I said, Yes, John, well call it the Old Bermuda Inn. Q: And you feel that thats at risk because of the development thats happening now. But, God, that was almost 100 years ago, you know? Burke: I used to, but I didnt I didnt keep it on everything. I restored the whole housewell, how long did I live there? Daller: Well, he said, he felt that house had spirits in it. Burke: Ed. And places on Staten Island are being destroyed every minute of the dayyou find another house is goingand its happening in all the boroughs! And right there in front of the windows was a coffin with all the flowers around it and everything. So we lived there, and it was a big courtyard and there were four buildings and the center courtyard was all grass. And I looked in the thing, I said, Holy shit. They didnt even have soap. He was an antiquehe had a big rug business in. Daller: Well, you did at a certain point, because you have a lot of photos. And there was a whole other floor, another story, and its built with the French style, in the French mansard. I had a dream thatin my dream, I woke up and I was laying in bed upstairs, and I could smell lilacs. And from the garden, you could come back in under the porch and down into the kitchen in the basement. Troy. Because the problem was is that my uncle was paying for everything in the househe was paying for the heating, he was paying all the utilities, paying all the bills. Im only a salesman in a department store. I said, and its going to take a lot of money to put that house back together. She said, Well, Im going to help you all I can. And I said, But why would I fix a house I didnt own? And she said, Well, why dont we talk about that. She said, If youre interested in buying it, I will make the arrangements that you can own it. But I dreamt it and I knew every single thing about it. I knew what she looked like, I knew where it was. Thats the only thing people could bring. Daller: And that house was beautiful. It was gorgeous and very ornatewas very, very much like Greek Revival. Daller: No. That was Mrs., what was her name? And finally their husbands were getting pissed at them, because they were never home, they were always here. And it didnt take long to sell because it was a big piece of property, nice house. She married her husband Thomas Burke on April 24, 1965, and had five children. Because you never finish, youre always finding something to do. Burke: Yes. But the upper story of the house was two more floors. And I took the money. Those stables? And that was inwhere the hell, what did they call that area where all the Eskimos lived? But the other house, one of his friends was pushed down the stairs. Tell us about when you were born? Prince Edward Island. I want to go back and ask for some more details about your childhood. Burke: Yes. With a little more improvement, and he would do a little improving on what I wanted, you know, then it was perfect when Mario did it. So my mother decided she would make it into a two-family, and rent out one part of it. George Burke was born on Staten Island and grew up in Annandale before moving to Florida with his family. We were only allowed so much. Burke: Yes. My brother, he come in and he said, What are you, nuts? So Walter was re-stationed to Fort Lauderdale in Florida. And underneath it was a whole kitchen and dining room that opened out to under the porch. She was the girl who hired me, and she ran the big Sherwin Williams store. And Ed was very good at taking dents and things out of cars and he could spray paint. I think there were hundreds of people that worked there. Burke: About the candle? And through all the years that the old lady had this woman taking care of her, the lilacs were always in bloomwhen they were in bloom, they were in the house. Q: So tell me about what its been like for you to live here. [laughs] And I lived there for a long time. Of course, over therewhen I was over thereEngland was just getting out of the bad part of the War [World War II], and they had nothing over there. So coming back to it was a change. And that painting of me, thats upstairs in my bedroomdid you ever see it? I know all the grounds that were around it were beautiful gardens. And they repaired all these taxis, repainted them, and then sold them all to Cuba. I saved that, thats still there. Daller: Plus the fact, it cost a fortune to take away the manure. Things like that? Q: And so all these items went upwalked up the stairs and were, carried back down the stairs. Daller: And when he wasnt doing that, he was horseback riding because he loved to ride and thats kind of segued himself to the Seguine House and to Bess. Its down in Tottenville, beautifully done. And they said, Oh my god, George, what are you Oh, and who else was that? Theres one here, theres one there, and theres one in the other room. Right? GEORGE CROAKE OBITUARY. So when I get out of the service, I got a job. And were doing this interview in Burkes home, in the Seguine Mansion on the South Shore of Staten Island. Burke: And all the others like it, well, I can remember, on the other side of the pond over there, going alongthe mansions that were over there. And she said, George, do you know who this is? and with her big Southern accent. Ticonderoga. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a member of the Historic House Trust. So theres no more Scalamandr, I dont think, is there? And that still is, today, one of the great places around here, the Old Bermuda Inn, and John still owns it. Dont forget I, for yearsin London, I went to university. He moved into the house shortly after the sale, and worked from the basement to the roof, and outwards throughout the grounds and stables, to complete the restoration. In a house that you dont even own? He used to stay out here. Burke: Yes, but just think of that gorgeous, bigthe mansion that this was their farmhouse, up the street here, that was gorgeous. That house, it was a big French mansard, big Victorian. So what I did, I decided, well, Id go inand we had where you could buy all your liquor and such in the post exchange. I was It was a sweet sixteen Ill never forget. So thats how that all came about. So I went around and looked and looked and I said, You know, I could open a restaurant. And I walked around and I found a couple of nice places. Burke: Yes. But I had all this beautiful carved stuff. Burke is joined in this interview by his niece, Linda Daller. Burke: She has it. I had all the walls done. But those things, I couldnt. Chris was the one that got involved with it. Daller: Well, they hope to. And Diane said, Oh, Marian has it.. Q: Well, Im pretty much at the end of my questions. Tarrytown-Sleepy Hollow. But I forgot what the other two things were. And they said, Well, we cant handle it, George. It was a mess of a mess. His family was like aristocratic. Its still that way. And, you know, who has that!? Burke, who knew of the home and property from the time when he was a child, was committed to the challenge. So everything just kept going off and someone would have all of this, someone would have all of that. Burke: Oh, well, the Eskimos up there would give me beautiful mukluks and all kinds of things. Mom, you own the house, you own at least part of it, or half of it. But they tore the house down to build that school. So I went out and I said toI had two roommates, and I said to my roommates, Wheres my box? And they said Oh, well, Sergeant Joiner came in and took it. I said, Oh, no! I went running out. But it only reached a certain point of it, not in the very beginning. And it was called SS White [Dental Manufacturing Company]. But thats part of whats been going on down here. So every time she wants to go riding, she has to go all the way to New Jersey, ride her horse, and then come all the way back. But how many people really have a sense of history anymore? So when he left the apartment and came to Staten Island, things started to move back into different sisters again until he was ready to relocate it again. Hes the man that built the house. Well, it doesnt matter, her name. But before we know it, there wont be a thing left in the house. But Id go off with Murphy and wed go to these estate sales and most of the stuff thats in here was, I bought and shipped it all back. If it wasnt for Mrs. Mackey across the street telling me about the funeral, I would have never known. Burke: I think, what was left of it, the sons moved to California and they opened up a Scalamandr in California. Burke: Oh, I loved her. Burke: Im glad I did. And they were good investments. In fact, he was just a few years older than I, and wasnt it last year we were trying to locate him? That was something that you had restoredis that right? Unfortunately. Put a candle right in the middle of that floor and go take a walk. [laughs] He called it the one-candle house. Q: I wanted to ask, also, theres a painting of you in the house, right? But Ive got to bring that portrait down and put it above that fireplace and get rid of that painting thats there. If you give me a big helping hand here. I said, You know, I dont make that much money. Q: And so when you were deciding what to collect, were you thinking about. Burke: Well, youve got to thank Mrs. Seguine. Because he paid for the entire outside himself. So we need to get help. Burke: Let me think of how all that started. She was on TV complaining about it. You werent allowed to buy much because it was worth a fortune over there to the general public, to the British. So my sister Bess said, Well, come on, lets go to Florida. I dont know if it ever took off. Burke: So I did that [sold the Tidewater Inn]. Eric. I had just bought this house, and it needed a lot of work. Unfortunately, you got to find environmentalists, theyve got to look for things and theyve got to point things out. One day, he was gone. I went to grammar school and high school here. Well. Sell the other half to Billthat was my brother and you and George, move with me to Florida. So we all thought that was a great idea. One woman wouldnt go it, cant think of her name. And people were selling anything out of their house to support themselves and live. [laughs]. Constantly. Then I decided, well, Im going to get myself a nice apartment. Daller: We lived several places. They tore down those two nice little cottages that were there. And then the people that moved out left a bunch of old furniture, and these were the two that they left. We were doing other parties at the time, the only thing we still maintain is the White Party. Christ, a good ten, twelve years. Devoted father of Matthew I. Burke, Jason L. Burke, and Georgina P. Burke, all of Hull. And he come from a very, very wealthy family in Madrid. I mean, Captains Quarters, instead of building all those condos down there, it would have been beautiful to have another stately home there. I was always in the operating room or someplace like that. Q: No, that covers it! The front porch was up high. Burke: Mario Buatta got me into all of that. When did it start to feel done? Theres none of the spirits. And I got a good price for that.
